Kolkata: Police arrested suspended Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh on Saturday in connection with the multi-crore Saradha Group ponzy scam. 
The development came just few minutes after Left Front chairman Biman Bose demanded a CBI probe into the chit fund scam and claimed that several names other than that of its chairman Sudipta Sen had cropped up in connection with it. 

EOW seeks to attach assets of Saradha Group

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch on Monday moved the State government seeking approval for attachment of properties of the Kolkata-based Saradha Group, accused in the multi-crore chit fund scam.Two cases were registered against the group in Balasore and Puri. EOW Deputy IG of Police said the Crime Branch had seized properties of the group and wanted to attach them under the Odisha Protection of Interests of Depositors (in Financial Establishments) Rules, 2013.

Suspended MP gives crucial papers in chit fund scam

Suspended Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh, who was quizzed by the ministry of corporate affairs’ investigative wing –Serious Frauds Investigation Office (SFIO)— on the Saradha chit fund scam, was said to have handed over some crucial documents to the investigators on Friday. 
According to sources, SFIO will also quiz another the Trinamool MP for his alleged involvement in the scam, which duped lakhs of investors into depositing in ponzi schemes. 

Chit fund probe panel seeks six months extension

The Justice R K Patra commission of inquiry, constituted to probe illegal collection of money by chit fund companies has sought an extension for six months for completing its investigation.
The one-man commission has written to the state home department to extend its tenure.
Sources said, the commission has received about 6,00,000 affidavits as on September 28 and urged the state government to appoint three lawyers for scrutinizing the affidavits. With the increasing number of affidavits already received, the commission's tenure has been extend four times.

HC reserves its verdict on CBI probe plea in chit fund scam

The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday reserved its verdict on the petition that demanded CBI probe into the Saradha chit fund scam. During the hearing, Subrata Mukhopadhyay, the petitioner's counsel, told the Division Bench of Justice Ashim Kumar Banerjee and Justice Mrinal Kanti Chaudhury that the amicus curae did not mention the letter that Saradha CMD Sudipta Sen wrote to the CBI levelling allegations against two Trinamool Congress MPs. He had also asked the investigating agency to treat the letter as an FIR.

Two arrested in Saradha chit fund scam case

A man, who was in-charge of the scam-tainted Saradha Group chit fund company in North Bengal and Malda district, and his wife were arrested by police on a complaint that they siphoned off money taken from depositors.The police on Friday said Debashis Deb Sharma, 50, and his wife Manasi Deb Sharma were arrested on Thursday night based on a complaint lodged by Ashraful Sheikh at the Chanchal Police Station.

Chit fund scam: Showcause notice to channels run by Saradha group

NEW DELHI: The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has issued showcause notice to the channels run by West Bengal-based Saradha group for alleged violations of uplinking and downlinking guidelines. 
The ministry has also asked the Home Ministry to specify if its clearance to the channels is still valid after it came to notice that new people had been nominated as directors in the company that runs the channels, a senior official said. 

WB govt to soon get Centres comments on chit fund bill: P Chidambaram

NEW DELHI: Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram today said the West Bengal government will soon get comments of the Centre on the bill passed by the state assembly for protection of investors in chit fund schemes. 
"The Ministry of Finance has given its comments to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). I think they (MHA) are awaiting comments from one or two other ministries, perhaps the Ministry of Company Affairs," Chidambaram said in reply to a question regarding the bill passed by West Bengal. 

Odisha orders judicial probe into chit fund scam

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Thursday ordered a judicial probe into an alleged chit fund scam in the state, an official said. 
A commission of inquiry will be set up to probe the alleged fraud committed by various chit fund companies, including the Kolkata-based Saradha Group that went bust last month, the official said. The group was running a ponzi scheme, and is estimated to have duped over 10 lakh people. The loss from that scam is estimated at around Rs 1,000 crore. 

RBI chief briefs house panel on chit-fund scam

Reserve Bank of India Governor D. Subbarao, on Friday, briefed a Parliamentary panel on regulatory issues concerning the recent chit-fund scam in West Bengal and discussed steps that could be taken to prevent recurrence of such frauds.
According to sources, Dr. Subbarao informed the members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance about the limitation of the central bank in regulating all deposit taking entities.

The chit fund fraudsters did not even spare sex workers in West Bengal. Trapped by the cheats to invest their hard-earned savings in ponzi schemes, thousands of sex workers in the state's red-light districts have lost crores of rupees.
A majority of investments were made in the Saradha Group, which is under the scanner for defrauding lakhs of investors. According to a survey conducted by an NGO, as many as 16,000 sex workers in 59 red-light pockets had invested more thanRs.9 crore with various chit fund companies.

Debjani Mukherjee admitted to hospital : Chit fund scam

Kolkata: Debjani Mukherjee, one of the main accused in the Saradha Ponzi scam, was on Tuesday admitted to the state-run SSKM hospital. "She has been admitted with certain complaints like weakness, reeling and scanty urination. She is under observation of the doctors and there is nothing serious regarding her health condition," a hospital source said. 
Earlier, she was admitted to a private hospital last week as she was suffering from gastrointestinal tract infection.
